House at Carpmael Road
Carpmael Road, Singapore
This 1960s corner-terrace house is an “additions & alterations” project but due to strict building regulations limiting the extent of the “additions & alterations” to the existing house, it was not possible to add an extra level nor extend the front and side – it was decided to extend only the rear to accommodate two additional bedrooms upstairs over a covered patio below and tailor the layout to suit the owners’ unique lifestyle and their two pet dogs.
The owners love the old ventilation blocks on the existing balcony above the car porch, so they were retained and more were added to augment the natural ventilation of the house -together with the addition of adjustable screens to accord privacy and control the permeability of natural light, these subtle features not only gave the old house a new lease of life but a timeless understated elegance.
